Custom Cookies: Sweet Success

While we sell a lot of our couture images, we also do a lot of custom cookie orders.  We’ve received some fantastic cookie graphics for our cookies over the years, but the order from Jessica T. takes the cake.

Jessica is applying for her dream job (we can’t tell you where just yet), and she’s asked us to send a dozen cookies with one of her fabulous designs and the words “call me” with her number on them – absolutely brilliant!   (For privacy issues, I’ve blocked out most of her phone number on the ribbon).  My description of her snazzy design isn’t doing the custom cookies justice so I snapped a quick shot with my iphone before we shipped them out yesterday.  I think you’ll agree that there’s a pretty good chance she should snag the job!   Good luck Jessica!  Please keep us posted!

Gumdrop Cookie Shop Participates in Camp Twin Lakes Program

A couple weeks ago we received a call to participate in a really fantastic program called the Partners Card, by offering a 20 percent off discount code for our custom cookies and couture cookies.   The Partners Card is a fundraiser fully supported by Camp Twin Lakes, a not-for-profit organization offering year-round recreational, therapeutic and educational programs for children with serious illnesses and life challenges. For 10 days, Friday, October 22nd – Sunday, October 31st, The Partners Card is sold and can be used  in over 550 retail stores and restaurants in the Atlanta area and surrounding suburbs, providing customers with 20 percent off purchases during the 10 days.

However, this year they are expanding the fundraiser to exist online (which is where we come in!) and the 20 percent off will be valid for 24 days.   So, if you’re interested in participating, Partner Cards are $60 each and one hundred percent of the proceeds from the purchase of a Partners Card support Camp Twin Lakes, subsidizing 80% of the cost to send a child to camp.  You can purchase them at www.partnerscard.com beginning on September 1st.

Custom Cookies: Mother-of-the-Bride Designed Cookie Favors

It makes my day when I receive a nice email from a client about our custom cookies, but it makes my week when they send photos!   I recently worked with Mother-of-the-Bride Carolyn who designed the wedding cookie favors for her daughter Elizabeth’s wedding.  The custom cookie favors were to be placed at each place setting so it was important that the cookies matched the table arrangements.  Carolyn provided me with her custom design and we worked on a few samples together until we got the colors just right.  We  selected a custom ribbon color to tie the colors together.  You can take a quick look at the photos below that Carolyn sent me from her daughter’s special day.

Gumdrop Cookie Shop Hearts Ladies who Launch

logo big Gumdrop Cookie Shop Hearts Ladies who Launch

After I took the very scary plunge and dove head first into my custom cookie business, one of the first things I did was sign up for the New York Chapter of Ladies who Launch (LWL), an amazing organization that provides women business owners (or those just thinking of starting a business) a network and services opportunities.

While I HEART the freedom of having my own gig, I so so so so so so miss the camaraderie of my old teammates (shout out DVPR!) so I felt a networking group would give me the opportunity to fill the work-from-home-void – and it certainly did the trick.  Through LWL I’ve been able to meet other small business owners, attend interesting speaker events & workshops, share ideas, and be part of a forum to throw out questions when I wanted to pull my hair out over the many small biz challenges that seem to (poof!) spring up weekly out of thin air.

Our NY leaders, Stella and Karla are so fab and are consistently putting together irresistible offers and events for members (and non-members too!).   On that note, you don’t have to be a member to be part of events, but if you get an oh-so-worth-it-discount if you are a member (or Strata members as we are called).   Plus, they have a GREAT incubator program that can help get you started on the right foot when you are in the beginning stages of your biz.  I so wish I knew about the LWL incubator program when I first started my business as I’m sure it would have saved me a whole lotta Excedrin and a whole lotta money and a whole lotta tears (oh hello you scary little trademark).

Best of all, you might actually win the friendship jackpot and get a pal or two out of the deal like I did.   SO, if you have the tiniest little seed of an idea about your own business, you best take those little fingers and click on this LINK pronto and get yourself a membership.   It’s OK, you can thank me later.  Or you if you are in the NYC area, you can come on by to the event on May 25th and thank me in person.  I hope to see you then!

Custom Cookies: A Vote for Grace!

What better way to encourage your fellow classmates to cast  a vote for student council than with a little sugar!  When Grace’s mom contacted me about creating custom cookies with “Vote for Grace Carrier” text on them I thought the mother-daughter team came up with a great idea!   She wanted something fun and with the colors pink and green. Fantastic!   We took our monogram template, changed the colors and added in the text.  We tied them up with a pink bow for good luck and sent them out the door.  Hopefully Gumdrop Cookie Shop helped bring Grace a win!

A Break from Custom Cookies: On Mexican Time

Two weeks ago I took some time off from making custom cookies for weddings, showers, and parties to take a trip to visit San Miguel de Allende, which is a colonial town located in the central mountains of Mexico.  On the flight down I read a wonderful book called On Mexican Time by Tony Cohan, which captures the author’s journey relocating to San Miguel with his wife.   The area has changed since Tony initially wrote the book about twenty years ago, but it still gave me some great insights into the culture and beauty of what San Miguel had to offer.

When we initially arrived in San Miguel, the ”New Yorker” in us didn’t know if we would be able to occupy ourselves for an entire week in this small colonial town, but we quickly realized that we were very wrong.  We kicked off the week enjoying the beautiful architecture and taking a home & garden tour that includes stops at three of some of the nicest homes in San Miguel.   We continued the week admiring the beautiful homes of San Miguel from the outside with each street more beautiful than the next.

San Miguel is also filled with wonderful artists and you can find many of their works at La Fabrica Aurora, which takes nearly a half day to see all of the work in this restored factory.  Hubby took tennis classes in the mornings while I attended a wonderful cooking class at a tradition Mexican cooking school where I learned all about salsas and using chilies.  Those little dried peppers have a whole new meaning in my book.  YUM!  We also took a day trip to Guanajuato where we visited the home of Diego Rivera, Don Quixote Iconographic Museum, and the mummy museum, which was a bit gross if you ask me.

No trip with the hubby and me is complete of course with finding some delicious restaurants.  Besides the yummy street side rotisserie chicken that we gobbled down (I know it’s against the rules, but it was yummy) two of our favorite stops included an absolutely beautiful restaurant called The Restaurant at Sollano 16 and Jackie’s where Jackie herself greeted us at the door.    We finished things off with Churros at San Agustine’s in el centro.

It’s back on New York time for me.  Onto my next batch of bridal shower favor cookies for next weekend!

Aja’s “I just made it up sweet salty popcorn deliciousness”

I certainly couldn’t get all the custom cookies out the door each week without a little help. It takes awhile to frost and then tie all of the bridal shower cookies, wedding favor cookies, and corporate logo cookies so sometimes I have to enlist an extra set of hands.  When I’m in a real pickle, that help has come (after a desperate plea) in the form of my friend Aja who has her hands in so many different activities that I don’t know how she keeps them all straight.

I initially met her through the North Brooklyn Runners group, which she started (and, ahem, now has over 200 runners). Now I keep up with her through my book club and ANOTHER group she started called Work It Brooklyn for entrepreneurs in the Brooklyn area.  When I’m in the mood for a snack, I also can find Aja at the Greenpoint Food Market (among other areas in the hood) where she sells her delicious sandwiches.  Oh, did I mention that Aja also has a full time job as Natural Foods Chef?   Feeling lazy yet?

I mention Aja because the other night she invited me to a clothes swap.  A clothes swap?  Hmm? Never been.  Sounds interesting and I certainly love the recycling idea so I’ll give it a shot.   I stuffed a bunch of clothes in a bag that never seem to see daylight and carted them over to Aja’s place.  When I arrived everything was neatly organized - dresses, shirts, blouses, t-shirts, pants, jewelry, misc, etc.  Instructions were to just put your clothes in the respective piles and wait for everyone to arrive.   I couldn’t believe how much stuff already filled the room.  Soon the wine was flowing and the swapping began!   It was fabulous and I walked away with some lovely little numbers including an adorable dress from Anthropologie and a copy of The Story of Edward Sawtelle.   The most fun (and satisfying) part of the evening was seeing someone excited about an item I brought that never seemed to look right on me.

Since I try to keep this blog focused on food, it brings me to the reason I started this post.  While awaiting for the other swappers to arrive, Aja put out a bowl of popcorn hot off the stove, so I of course dug right in….    Sweet? Salt?  Aja, WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS POPCORN?  It’s delicious!!!!   She replied with a cool “oh I just made it up.”    Of course she did.

So, here’s Aja’s recipe for “I just made it up sweet salty popcorn deliciousness.”    It’s a little bit like my Italian grandmother’s old recipes where she doesn’t give measurements so just “add a little of this and a little of that” and experiment until you find the flavor you are looking for.

- Make a batch of organic popcorn (stove top people - no microwave popcorn).  Add Organic Dark Agave nectar, Sea Salt, Black Pepper, and Sichuan Pepper.  Mix well with popcorn.

Wow, I’m tired just writing this post.  Great job Aja and thanks for including me!

Custom Cookies for a Brooklyn Bride

I love it when I have the opportunity to make custom decorated cookies for my friend’s celebrations – especially showers and weddings.   Last year we were invited to an uber cool Brooklyn wedding for our friends Jeff and Jenn at one of my favorite restuarants in Brooklyn called Flatbush Farm.  The restaurant specializes in using local and seasonal ingredients to whip up their delicious offerings and their mealsnever dissapoint – and neither did the food at the wedding, which was quite memorable long after the festivities were over.

Before the wedding, Jen asked if I would do bridal shower cookie favors for her shower using the same graphic that they were using in the invitation.   The graphics included their silhouettes on a sky blue background.  For the shower we used the same graphic and added Jen’s name and the date of the shower.  As I was flipping through some photos I realized that next month they will celebrate their one year anniversary so thought it was a good time to do a post.  Happy 1st Anniversary Jen & Jeff!

Custom Cookies for Chic Sweets

Florida-based Chic Sweets creates unbelievably beautiful dessert tables for weddings, corporate parties, and other events.   Owner Natalie Clamp sent me some photos from a recent wedding dessert table that included some of our custom cookies  as part of the milk & cookies portion of the table.

Per Natalie’s direction, we created two inch versions of one of our couture designs and changed the color and text.  Check the shots below from the event – they are gorgeous!  I especially love the mini glasses of milk that go with the cookies.
